In the United Kingdom, the life of 78-year-old Thomas Cheetham is ended by serial killer Harold Shipman. Thomas would be the penultimate victim of 1996 and one of 215 confirmed murders.

December 6th

In India, a 16-year-old girl known as Rupa, is raped, beaten, and murdered by Indian serial killer and rapist, Umesh Reddy. Rupa lived in the same area as a previous victim who escaped in November of 1996.

Reddy was arrested shortly after, but would escape custody an astonishing four times. Until 2002, when he was arrested again, and convicted of nine counts of murder and rape. He confessed to 18 murders but police suspected he had been involved in the deaths of at least 20 women across various states in the country.

In 2007, on top of his life sentences, he was sentenced to death for raping a 37-year-old woman in front of her son. As of 2019, he remains on death row in India.
